Peanut Butter Pine Cones (30 min. craft)

Happy Fall!
It's the time of year when the birds will start to head south. To help them on their trips you can do this easy craft, these can be done by even very little hands with some help.
If your child is allergic to peanut butter, soy butter could be substituted.

Supplies needed
Pine cones, if you have pine trees, these will work (FREE!)
Creamy peanut butter (buy cheap, the birds won't be choosy like moms :) )
Florist wire
Wire cutters (if you don't have these, it's a good investment)
Bird seed (wild seed is best)
wide low rim bowl for the seed
Table knife
Newspaper

Little hands can do everything except cutting and twisting the wires.

First thing to do is spread the newspaper for easy cleanup.
Cut the florist wire to 8"-10" lengths, one for each pine cone.
Pull the wires through the pine cones and twist tightly leaving the rest to dangle for wrapping into a tree.
Next cover the pine cones with a liberal coating of the peanut butter with your table knife.
Then roll each pine cone in the seed bowl covering the pine cone all over with seed.
Lay aside and repeat for all pine cones.

Take them outside and hang then in your favorite trees and watch the birds come for a snack.
Hint: To add to this project, a bird watching book, will help you know what kind of birds come to your area and what kind of seed to buy to bring them to your trees. It will help you teach your child what bird they are seeing.

When the pine cones are empty you can refill with the peanut butter and seed until the pine cone falls off the wire:)
